What is your favorite Children's Book?

Hello blogging friends!  I'm thinking about creating a proposal on donorschoose.org for new children's books.  I've seen a lot of great ideas out there that use children's literature books that I don't have in my classroom...for example, Pete the Cat.  Tell me; What is your favorite children's book (or two) that you teach with or to teach new concepts.  If you have new ones that have recently come out or "oldies"that you couldn't live without...I'd love to know about them.  Please share!  Can't wait to hear about the books and maybe how you use them.

  2. I love using "Caps for Sale" and "The Littles". My kiddos love wearing lots of caps on their heads during our readings and the dioramas of a scene in the Littles are to die for!

  4. You may already be familiar with this book, but if not it is a MUST for a kindergarten room. The book is Rhyming Dust Bunnies. I just purchased it for my classroom from our school book fair. My kinders LOVE this book. They think it's hilarious and it's great to generate rhyming words.

  5. I love Mo Willems books for my classroom...especially the Elephant and Piggie books. My kiddos love acting these out and can even read some of them by the end of kindergarten. Pigs Make Me Sneeze is our favorite right now.

  6. My students absolutely love Mo Willems. We love We Are in a Book and I Broke My Trunk and There is a Bird on Your Head best right now. I have the stuffed animals and they even put bandages on the trunk of Gerald and Piggie's snout to act out I Broke My Trunk.
I love to read the My Father's Dragon trilogy.
My students all love nonfiction books and I have purchased a ton of lower level nonfiction books from Rigby and Scholastic. Even the girls adore nonfiction.

  7. It's a classic, "Harry the Dirty Dog." I always love to read it, and so do my k-kids. It's a simple book to understand (How did Harry get dirty, how come his family does not recognize him, what can he do?) I use it for prediction and sequencing.

  8. Anything by Audrey Wood. My favorite is King Bidgood's in the Bathtub. My next fav. is The Napping House. Her husband's illustrations are beautiful. I also love anything from Kevin Henkes - especially Chrysanthemum. I love the way he writes! I can't think right off the top of my head how I use these books in my room. It is getting late and it is FRIDAY! Maybe I will post again tomorrow when my brain isn't mush! One more - Stephanie's Ponytail by Robert Munsch.

  10. I just started reading the AZ Calendar Mysteries as a read aloud (chapter book) to my kiddos -- with this group, I am AMAZED how they sit and listen! They are completely engaged. There is one for every month. I hope to start them at the beginning of the year next year! I also LOVE Kevin Henkes! I love Friends by Helme Heine too - soo sweet.

  11. I love the books WOW! School! and Wow! City! by Robert Neubecker. I just noticed he has a new one out called Wow! America! that I need to get. I start the year off with Wow! School! and we make our own version about our school with pictures. I teach in a rural town in Maine so I use Wow! City to talk about the difference between where we live and where others live. I love doing writing activivities with these books. The text is simple. Kids can read it with you and they really love them. I feel a must have!

  12. So many choices...I recently listed a few on my blog so check those books out too. I, too, love Pete the Cat! A couple of my other favorites are The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (great for teaching point of view) and Charlie the Caterpillar (life cycle of a butterfly and kindness to others). Good luck with your proposal!
