Winter Centers & Oldie but Goldie FREEBIE

I have these good intentions of making blog posts on Friday nights; however, that rarely happens.  Let's face it…life happens and things just don't always go according to plans, but I guess it's never too late show what was happening in my classroom last week.  :)  Here ya go!

All of these centers can either be found in my Frosty Fun Unit OR my Winter Literacy or Winter Math Centers.
We are working on ordering teen numbers
Spinner Addition…they caught on so well

Sweater Math…you can find this FREE HERE

I love this one because it really makes them think…I've had this center for a couple of years and they always love it!  Something different!

CVC word practice
A fun and different way to find rhyming words...

I always let me students paint and then decorate their own snowman with scrap paper.
Then, we measure them and write on the little recording sheet.  These are super cute hanging in our room!

At writing center this week, I let them use stamps to create a CVC snowman and I love that their work is hanging from our ceiling.  :)

We made these little cutie patooties!  I love the way they turned out.
And, of course, we added a writing piece at the bottom.

We read Snowmen at Night and wrote verbs in our writing.  You can find this super cute snowman HERE from First Grade Blue Skies.
SO adorable!  Doesn't our hallway display look great!  :)

Party Blowers & Bubbles

So, who doesn't love party blowers and bubbles?  These kids did!

They went crazy for this activity which you can find in my New Year packet HERE.  :)
Since we had a short week with 1 weather day, and 2 delayed days…PLUS I was out sick 1 day this was the perfect week to bring out these activities.
(Please excuse the pictures taken with my phone…I forgot my real camera…ugh!)

So, I gave every student a party blower first.  I found a pack of 8 at Walmart for less than $2 bucks.
Next, I explained the activity in detail and made sure everyone knew only to blow on their party blowers after the question was asked…haha…yeah right!
Last, I showed them cards and called out a word…they had to blow the blower for each sound in the word.  Some of my kiddos are having a hard time with phoneme segmentation so this was the perfect time to whip out this little activity.  Sound cards are included in the New Year pack.
We also, said the sounds aloud just for the auditory practice as well.  :)
I put each child's party blower in a ziploc baggie with their name so we can use them again next week.
They begged to keep playing….loved it!

Aaaannnd…this afternoon when we finished up with our school-wide bicycle giveaway and parade
(which you can see a picture of on my FB page HERE), we had few minutes before time to go home so we went to the rug and did this little activity.

Each child got a small bottle of bubbles like this.  I found these at Walmart as well…24 bottles for $3 bucks.

Again, I explained the details of the activity and asked them not to blow until they were told…self-control people…HA!  Surprisingly, most of them exhibited this quality much better with bubbles than with party blowers.  :)
I whipped out some flashcards and started with the first student to  my left…if they got it right they got to blow bubbles; if not, they had to wait their next turn.  This went very fast and I just kept going round and round the circle until we ran out of time.  I love activities like this because you can use this concept for ANYTHING!
They seriously loved it and kept their attention the whole time.  They certainly did not want to be in "lala land" and miss the opportunity to blow bubbles.
I wrote their name on their container of bubbles so we could play again next week!
We are storing them in our crayon baskets at our tables.

Within this short week, we managed to get this little cutie-patootie project done!
I love it hanging from our ceiling every year…They look adorable and love that math is incorporated too!

Hope you see something you can use in your own classroom!
After all, that's why this blog is here…to share ideas!  :)

Christmas, Christmas, Christmas!

We have been busy, busy, busy!  I love this time of year, but it gets very hectic in the classroom…you know, trying to somewhat teach amongst the chaos cheer and trying to squeeze every last ornament, craft, and activity into December before it's all too late!  Last week we were still in full blown centers and small groups; however, this week we're kinda not  doing the center thing and just working from my December Craze packet!  I have to tell you it's, been kinda wonderful having these print and play type games right at my fingertips to throw out there on the table when I need to!  And, I have lots of pictures to show you as well, so here goes!

These first 3 center games we played last week and you can find them in my Holly Jolly Christmas unit.
I like integrating math and literacy into my centers as you can see below.
They loved these interactive presents they could actually open to find the sight word to read.
We matched numbers to number words with real gift tags!
These next 3 centers from last week can be found in my Deck the Halls unit.
Working hard on middle sounds with this center...
Another interactive center where they build the sight word with lights!
This was the first center this year where they had to unscramble the sight word, but they did SO good!
And, these 2 can be found in my December Craze packet…just print and play!  Plus, there are TONS more just like these in this packet!

I was so surprised last week when I first asked my kids the difference between needs and wants; SO we worked really hard on learning the difference.  This sorting activity can be found in my Holly Jolly Unit
We made Needs and Wants Lists too.  They loved finding and cutting from magazines.

4 more days for me!  How about you??
