The Letters Are Lost!

Well, Friday was the last day of our introduction to the alphabet.  Now, we have been introduced to all the letters and all the sounds...that means Monday we will begin focusing on one letter per week.  We read a cute story named, The Letters Are Lost by Lisa Campbell Ernst.  So, when we went to get our letters out of  our alphabet treasure box, they were gone!  Oh no!  Well, we went on a treasure hunt first, by singing We're Goin' on a Treasure Hunt by Jack Hartmann.  The kids loved this song.  It's too cute!  Then, we hunted the letters in our classroom.  Each child found one letter.  Then, we put them back in order on a pocket chart.  (J is still missing...hmmmmm....not on purpose....we really can't find it.)  (Maybe Lakeshore will send us another one.)  We discussed how we need all the letters so that we can make words and read!  We sang the ABC song as we pointed to the letters.  This was such a fun activity.  Oh, and because we were such good treasure hunters we all got jeweled treasures.  


After finding all the letters, we each got a big letter to decorate with something that begins with that letter.  You'll see in the pictures.  There are lots of pictures, but I just couldn't resist.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

This week our theme was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!  What a fun week, but busy it was especially after being our for Labor Day.  The kids loved this story so much and wanted to hear it again and again.  We did some fun activities during centers like stamping the alphabet in coconut trees.  In math, we counted coconuts and matched them to the correct number tree.  We also made Chicka Chicka Boom Boom AB patterns.  Below are pictures of our cute toilet paper Chicka Chicka trees.  We put letter stickers on the leaves of our trees.  I thought they turned out so cute.  Parents, inside those trees is a paper of the alphabet.  Keep this handy and use it as a resource.  Your child can pull it our and use it to practice their letters and sounds, and singing the alphabet while pointing to the correct letters.  

Color Mixing

For one fun activity this week we learned about mixing primary colors to create secondary colors.  We began by reading the book White Rabbit's Color Book.  It was about a curious white rabbit who wonders what will happen when she jumps into different color paint buckets.  She learns that red and yellow make orange, red and blue make purple, and blue and yellow make green.  At the end, she jumps into red, yellow, and blue and turns brown.  She decides she likes herself as brown.  Next, we mixed our own paint colors to create those secondary colors.  

Measuring Ourselves!

We finished up with one activity from last week's "All About Me" unit on Tuesday of this week.  We learned a little about measurement.  We measured our friends with yarn.  Then, we put it in a bag to take home with us.  At the end of kindergarten, we can see how much we have grown!  Don't throw away that yarn, boys and girls!

All About Me!

This week our theme unit was "All About Me".  We learned how special and unique each one of us are.  We read lots of stories.  Some were silly, some were fact books, and some were about different feelings we may have.  Our favorite story was "Clap Your Hands" because it was an interactive book.  Over the course of the week we created graphs.  We talked about how graphs give us information about things or people and they are easy to read.  I asked the kids which was their favorite and I think the majority liked the eye pie graph.  We graphed our eye color, the number of letters in our names, our hair color, and if we are a boy or girl.  These graphs were meaningful to us because we learned things about the boys and girls in our classroom.  Creating graphs was also a new math skill this week.

During our "All About Me" unit we made these cute little people.  We used the first letter in our name and had to think of something that had the same beginning sound as our own name.  This activity spins off the book, "A My Name is Alice".  

We also made TLC style boys and girls.  I love this activity.  They always turn out so cute.  The neat thing about TLC is that everyone gets the same directions, but they all turn out a little different.  (See pictures below)  Enjoy!

Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum and Pink Day!

For pink day we read Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum by Lisa Wheeler.  What a cute book!  It's so funny.  Animals get stuck in the middle of the road in bubblegum.  Do they get unstuck before they get run over by a truck?  How do they get out of this sticky situation?  You'll have to read it to find out.  (okay okay, I won't leave you hanging...yes they do, but they have to chew, chew, chew and blow a giant bubble.  Below are a few pictures of us chewing our very own bubblegum and trying to blow bubbles.  Kinda hard for kiddos!  We had some tiny bubbles, but they kids loved trying anyway.  We also learned our pink song from Frog Street Press.  Here are the lyrics.

This week our theme unit is "All about Me".  We are creating graphs about features that we have such as  hair color, eye color, and if we are a boy or girl.  Check back later for more pics!  

Rainbow Day!

Rainbow day was a busy day in Mrs. Lee's class...but a fun day!  We practice sorting all the colors and made a brown bear button wall story that we hung in our hallway.  First, we sorted the buttons by color, then we glued them onto our bears.  Next, we wrote the color word that matched the buttons on our bears.  We worked with a partner and took turns sharing the tasks we had to complete.  

Below is the finished wall story and a close up of one of the bears so you can see how cute they turned out.  They did a great job drawing the faces as well!  Oh, and under our bear story are our TLC Viola Swamps from the story "Miss Nelson is Missing".

Also, below we made shape people during art center this week, torn paper rainbows, and the picture on the right shows our rainbow hair people that we made after we learned the poem.
